Comfortable Tooth Extractions & Wisdom Teeth in Holladay

Want a healthy, uniform smile? It may sound counterintuitive, but extractions are sometimes the best way to keep your teeth healthy. Extractions are designed to help reduce pain and prevent jaw problems and crooked teeth in the future.

At Smart Dental Care, we will try to keep your natural teeth in place, but this isn’t always the best treatment plan. Sometimes, a tooth is too damaged or your mouth is too crowded. In these cases, a tooth extraction and the following replacement tooth is the right solution.

We will always do everything we can to help you keep your natural teeth, we will also be honest about when a tooth extraction is the best option. Drs. Ashton and Nguyen can perform both regular teeth and wisdom teeth extractions quickly and efficiently in our office.

What Are Tooth Extractions?

A tooth extraction is simply completely removing a tooth. This process is sometimes called “pulling” a tooth and involves removing the tooth from the socket.

Our dentists can extract any of your teeth, including wisdom teeth. However, the wisdom tooth extraction process is slightly different from removing your other teeth.

What Are Wisdom Tooth Extractions?

Wisdom tooth removal, or wisdom tooth extractions, is the process of removing the permanent teeth in the outermost corners of your mouth. These teeth are also known as third molars. But, unlike other teeth, many people don’t have jaws big enough to allow the third molars to grow. In these cases, wisdom teeth can cause impaction and pain if they aren’t taken out.

While not everyone has wisdom teeth, most people do. Wisdom teeth usually “erupt” or come in between the ages of 17–26. However, some people have their wisdom teeth grow in when they are as young as 13 or 14.

Wisdom teeth extraction is often done before the teeth have grown in during a surgical procedure. However, they can also be removed in various stages of growth, including after they are fully formed.

When Are Extractions Necessary?

The reasons for an extraction will vary from person to person. Generally speaking, however, it’s a good idea to have a tooth extracted if it is infected badly enough that a root canal won’t restore it, or if the tooth is causing its neighbors to become misaligned or crooked.

We also often recommend having wisdom teeth removed before they have grown in, simply because these teeth often cause problems when they appear. We treat every patient’s wisdom teeth on a case-by-case basis, but extracting these wisdom teeth early is usually an effective way to avoid misaligned or impacted teeth in the future.

So, for a quick review, it may be best to remove a tooth if it is decayed, fractured, impacted, or crowding other teeth, or if you have advanced gum disease or a dental injury.

Our dentists and friendly dental team will determine the right plan to alleviate pain and restore your mouth. After tooth removal, we also offer tooth replacement options, such as crowns, implants, and bridges.

5 Benefits of Tooth Extractions

5 Benefits of Tooth Extractions

Every patient is different, so before we recommend a tooth extraction, we will examine your mouth and dental history. If trying to save or restore the tooth doesn't make sense, it’s best to remove the tooth.

In these situations, tooth extractions offer many benefits to your oral health and hygiene, such as:

1. Relieving pain and discomfort: Whether you have an infected tooth, an impacted tooth, or a crowded mouth, these conditions can cause discomfort and even pain. It may be challenging to eat what you love or even to speak. Removing the problem tooth will alleviate symptoms and increase your quality of life.

2.Preventing or removing infection: If you have advanced gum disease or severe tooth decay, removing the tooth is necessary, particularly if a root canal won’t address the issue. A tooth infection can be serious as it could spread and impact your health. It’s best not to wait to remove an infection.

3. Improving your smile: While you may worry about the appearance of a missing tooth, it’s still preferable to a crooked smile or infected tooth. After extracting the tooth, you can get a replacement tooth that looks natural and blends in with the rest of your smile.

4. Protecting your nearby teeth: If you have tooth decay or infections, they could spread to other teeth, especially if the pain keeps you from good dental hygiene habits. Removing the affected tooth will improve our dental health overall.

5. Increasing dental hygiene: An infected or overcrowded tooth makes maintaining a clean, fresh mouth more difficult. Without removing the tooth, it can be difficult to floss and brush correctly, which can cause bad breath and lead to cavities.

You deserve to have a pain-free smile. So, if you’re dealing with pain, infection, or discomfort, give Smart Dental Care a call to request an appointment.

Absolutely! When you have a tooth removed, you’ll receive local anesthesia to numb the area. We also offer laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation to our patients. These are a great option if you have dental anxiety, and sedation dentistry is common with wisdom tooth removal. Because wisdom teeth removal is a surgical procedure, sedation dentistry can help you relax and reduce stress.

We will always give you specific instructions on the day of your appointment. Generally speaking, you should keep the area clean with mouthwash. Then, brush and floss the rest of your teeth as usual. You should also take any prescribed medications and avoid strenuous physical activity for 2–3 days.

If you have sudden tooth pain or a dental injury, emergency dental services are necessary. At Smart Dental Care, we provide emergency dental services, including tooth extractions. Give us a call to learn more or get emergency dental care.

Recovery depends on the type of tooth being removed. For example, wisdom tooth extractions often take longer to recover from than other extractions. Usually, you can return to your normal activities in 48–72 hours. But, if you notice pain or other lasting symptoms, give us a call for help.

It’s best to avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods in the first few days after the treatment. However, you can start eating and drinking after leaving the appointment, unless directed otherwise. You should also avoid drinking through straws as doing so could impact the natural healing process. We will give you more information about aftercare on the day of your appointment, so you don’t need to remember it all now.
