Our Sedation Dentistry Options
At Smart Dental Care, we provide three different sedation dentistry treatments to meet the needs of all our patients. Here’s what you need to know about each.
Laughing Gas
Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, offers mild sedation and is a good option for patients of all ages. You inhale the nitrous oxide through a mask, and you’ll feel more relaxed and giddy during the appointment.
However, you’ll also be able to drive yourself after your appointment as the nitrous oxide wears off quickly. Most people can resume normal daily activities.
Oral Conscious Sedation
With oral conscious sedation, you’ll still be conscious throughout your treatment, but the effects are a bit stronger than laughing gas. With oral conscious sedation, you’ll take a pill before your appointment that makes you feel relaxed and sleepy. You may fall asleep, but you won’t be unconscious.
Oral sedation is great for patients with dental anxiety or those receiving more intensive treatments. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment. You’ll likely need a day or so to recover.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is best if you have extreme dental anxiety or other physical or mental health concerns. A calming sedative is given through an IV throughout your appointment. While you won’t be unconscious, you may fall asleep. You won’t be “put under” like with general anesthesia, but you likely won’t remember most of the procedure afterward.
If you receive IV sedation, we have a qualified nurse there to ensure you are safe and receiving enough anesthesia. You will need someone to drive you to and from the appointment and may need a couple of days to recover fully.
A Welcoming Environment
Sedation dentistry goes a long way to help relieve stress and ensure your comfort during appointments. However, it’s not all we do to ease anxiety. We create a tranquil office environment to ensure a quiet, calm experience during your visit with us.
Additional Accommodations
Many patients have unique needs or situations that require additional accommodations. If you or a loved one has sensory needs, physical disabilities, or any other situation that makes dental care stressful, we are happy to help!
We can do things like lower the lights or provide blankets when necessary. If you have questions or requests about how we can create a safe environment for you, don’t hesitate to reach out.
